Life can be tough anywhere, and with respect to many things.

When one worries about the economy, jobs being outsourced, rumors of war and conflict, and making ends meet, life is filled with stress. Unfortunately, there will always be those who turn to drugs or alcohol to try and eliminate that stress. The only thing is drug and alcohol abuse, which can lead to addiction, can only make life worse—not better. Anyone would be hard pressed to make a connection that substance abuse is known to lead to a better, more productive life. The first sensible thing to do when addicted to drugs or alcohol is to seek clinical help. It may take a while, and you man be at the very bottom of life’s existence, but the other only alternative is to keep heading for the cliff without clinical help.

Enrolling in Rehab

After enrolling in rehab, detox is the first and often most challenging step. The body has built up toxins that must be removed before rehab can begin in earnest. The body, at this point is going through painful withdrawal symptoms. It takes a qualified team to assist addicts at this stage. Medications and clinical assistance is provided to help walk the patient through the rough times. Depending on the severity of the addiction, inpatient or outpatient treatments will be recommended. Counseling and cognitive therapy treatments will prove to be most effective. Many patients will complete rehab, but the critical test of sobriety comes after they return to the world and everyday living.

Life After Rehab

Facing life will be the patient’s biggest challenge. Thus, there are a number of things patients should consider when making the transition back to normal life and to improve their chances for success.

1. Take things one day at a time. It is not a bad thing to want to take the bull by the horns, but consider that adjustments must be made. While patients may feel energetic, reinvigorated, and recharged, it is not wise to take on more than they can handle. Otherwise, a relapse may occur when stresses once again become overwhelming. Take time to readjust.

2. Try to repair social damage that may have occurred during your addiction. There is bound to be some. Relationships may have changed, and careers and jobs opportunities may have been placed on hold—or worse, eliminated. Family members may be at odds with each other as well. Rehab, hopefully, addressed many of these issues, but it will behoove you to continue to follow up.

Your rehab center will give you a thorough understanding of what is expected of you going forward. There should also be solid expectations that you set for yourself. Talk with others and ask what they expect of you. When people know that you are putting your best foot forward, they are far more likely to offer understanding and support.

It is also important to work with counselors and psychologists to develop new goals and future plans. Find new friends and engage in healthy activities. There is nothing like having a major sense of purpose in life. Purpose can help addicts surmount their challenges and work toward a healthy and productive life. Above all, do what you say you will do.
